Breeder Hens Farm

_

There are more chickens in the world than any other bird. In fact, more than 50 billion chickens are reared annually as a source of food, for both their meat and their eggs. Chickens farmed for meat are called broiler chickens, whilst those farmed for eggs are called egg-laying hens. Laying hens have been bred for egg laying. The 346 million chickens used each year for their eggs, called “laying hens” by the industry, endure a nightmare that lasts for two years. Modern commercial hens produce a very high yield of around 300 eggs a year. Chickens will naturally live for 6 or more years but after 12 months of laying, the hen’s productivity will start to decline. They are taken from breeding farms at 18 to 20 weeks old.

Lying Hens System

_
  1. Free-range poultry farming allows chickens to roam freely for a period of the day, although they are usually confined in sheds at night to protect them from predators or kept indoors if the weather is particularly bad.
  2. The barren battery cage: measure roughly 45.72 cm by 50.08 cm and hold five to 11 hens, each of whom has a wingspan of 81 cm. These cage eggs come from hens kept in small cages where their natural behaviors cannot be expressed.
  3. Enriched cages: Enriched cages provide more space than battery cages and can allow hens to express more of their natural behaviors, such as perching, dust-bathing, and nesting, they are still very restrictive.
